Sonorité toujours exemplaire.
The Spendor BC1 is a classic 3-way, stand-mounted loudspeaker from the 1970s, designed for BBC studio monitoring with a 200mm (8") Bextrene woofer, Celestion HF1300 tweeter, and Coles 4001 supertweeter. Renowned for vocal accuracy, it has a 50Hz–15kHz frequency response, 84dB sensitivity, and 8-ohm impedance.
Key Technical Specifications:
- Type: 3-way, reflex-loaded loudspeaker.
- Drive Units: 8" (200mm) Bextrene-cone woofer, 1.25" (32mm) soft-dome Celestion HF1300 tweeter, 0.75" (19mm) Coles 4001 supertweeter.
- Frequency Response: 50Hz – 15kHz (some early literature states 60Hz–14kHz
- Sensitivity: 84dB / 1W / 1m.
- Impedance: 8 Ohms nominal.
- Power Handling: 55W maximum (program), with early models as low as 8W–25W RMS.
- Crossover Frequencies: 3kHz and 13kHz.
- Dimensions: 635 x 300 x 300 mm
- Weight: 13–14 kg (approx. 28-30 lbs).
- Cabinet Construction: 12.3mm Baltic birch plywood with bitumastic damping pads.
Important Considerations:
- Version Variations: Early versions used Alnico magnets (blue/red) with white PVC woofer surrounds that can shrink; later versions used ferrite magnets.
- Amplification: Known to be "valve-friendly," performing well with low-power tube amplifiers, particularly due to its moderate impedance.
- Performance: Known for exceptional midrange and natural sound, though they lack deep, tight bass and have limited power handling compared to modern speakers.
